COLUMBUS (WCMH) — NBC4 has joined NBCUniversal’s Clear the Shelters initiative and will team up with Franklin County Animal Shelter, Capital Area Humane Society, Colony Cats & Dogs, Ohio SPCA & Humane Society and the Fayette Humane Society in central Ohio to host the second annual Clear the Shelters nationwide pet adoption drive on Saturday, July 23.
The Clear the Shelters initiative is a national pet adoption campaign that is spearheaded by the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, a division of NBCUniversal. The Clear the Shelters effort, which teams up more than 40 local NBC and Telemundo television stations with hundreds of animal shelters from all across the country, returns for a second consecutive year after last year’s highly successful inaugural effort which resulted in nearly 20,000 animals finding new homes. On this day, participating animal shelters in the central Ohio area will offer no-cost or reduced fee adoptions or waive pet spaying and neutering fees.
The Clear the Shelters nationwide pet adoption campaign will take place in more than 30 markets across the United States and Puerto Rico, including Columbus and central Ohio. On Saturday, July 23, 11 NBC-owned stations, 17-owned Telemundo stations, the regional news network necn. and more than 20 NBC affiliate stations will team up with more than 300 animal shelters from all across the country and Puerto Rico to participate in the second annual Clear the Shelters pet adoption campaign.
Locally, viewers will be able to watch special programming that raises awareness about the actual pet adoption day as well as issues, like the overpopulation of shelters in the Columbus area on NBC4 WCMH-TV. Moreover, NBC4 will engage viewers with news and information across various platforms, including on air during newscasts, online and via social media.
Additionally, Natalie Morales, NBC News’ TODAY West Coast Anchor, and soon-to-be host of Access Hollywood and Access Hollywood Live will host a 30-minute post-adoption drive special that will air on Friday, July 29 that will recap the previous week’s national day of action (check local listings).
This year’s Clear the Shelters event comes after last year’s highly successful inaugural effort, which resulted in nearly 20,000 pets finding new homes through an unprecedented partnership between the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations and hundreds of animal shelters located all across the country and in Puerto Rico. The nationwide day of action literally emptied dozens of animal shelters across the country and inspired local communities to take action and open their homes to animals in need. Various celebrities and news personalities, including Ellen DeGeneres ; Steve Harvey ; extra ’s Mario Lopez ; NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt ; Bravo’s Andy Cohen ; actress Sarah Michelle Gellar. singer and songwriter Rob Thomas ; and Telemundo network stars Carmen Villalobos and Sonya Smith among others, joined in Clear the Shelters ’ social media effort by posting selfies with their favorite pets.
