Yeh chirag bujh rahe hain

Mere saath jalte jalte. (Pakeezah)

The lament in bejewelled Meena Kumaris eyes, is brought alive through Kaifi Azmis poetry.

Kaifi was poetry. He may have been a man of many moods crusader, radical, nationalist, socialist, agnostic. romantic. But he expressed these affiliations through the prism of poetry.

Naima arif wordpress hosting you have submerged yourself in

The tyranny of time Waqt ne kiya kya haseen situm,

the charade of relationships Woh jo apna tha wohi kisi aur ka kyun hai,

heroism Zinda rehne ke mausam bahut hai magar, jaan dene ki rut aati nahin,

feminism - Jannat ek aur hai jo mard ke pahlu mein nahin (poem Aurat).

Kaifi chose to translate the prosaic in lyrical metaphors.

What lent his lyrics the exquisiteness of filigree was the liberal use of Urdu and a sensibility, passionate as a mans and fragile as a womans.

Come experience all this and more at the Urdu Mehfil @ Prithvi this month.

Uth meri jaan mere saath chalna hai tujhe

Goshe goshe mein sulagti hai chita tere liye

Farz ka bhes badalti hai qazaa tere liye

Qahar hai teri har narm adaa tere liye

Zehar hi zehar hai duniya ki hawa tere liye

Rut badal daal agar phoolna phalna hai tujhe

Uth meri jaan mere saath hi chalna hai tujhe.

Arise my love, you have to walk with me

A pyre burns for you in every corner

Death disguises itself as duty for you

Your gentle style is punishment for you

The world has only poison for you

Change the world if you want to blossom

Arise my love, you have to walk with me

Urdu Mehfil at Prithvi Thu, 13 Apr

Some vignettes from the April Urdu Mehfil on Firaq Gorakhpuri.

We were so blessed to have with us Firaq Sahab's granddaughter Anuradha with us.

She shared a few anecdotes where every year as a child she and her siblings would spend one week of the summer vacation at her grandfather's home. It was at such times spent with his daughter and his grandchildren that he would come alive.

Javed Sahab also shared his own interaction with Fiaq Sahab when as a young fledgling writer he was advised by Firaq Sahab, He said, ' Lafzon ko ehtiyaat se bart a kijiye. Unme jaan hoti hai '

[Use words sparingly with discretion. They have life in them. ]

Lubna Salima and Suhail Akhtar read excerpts from Firaq Sahab's long autobiographical poem Hindola.

On the request of Javed Sahab, Suhail also read an important Firaq nazm - Aadhi Raat and

a few Rubaais. The beauty of Roop - collection of Rubais written by Firaq is that he sought to create Hindustaniyat by weaving Sanskrit and Hindi words into the Urdu verses. He did this so seamlessly, so skilfully that they do not feel out of place, but instead add to the beauty of the rubaai.

We are deeply grateful to Prithvi Theatre for hosting the Mehfil every month.

is daur meN zindagi bashar kii

biimaar ki raat ho gaii hai

A simple, outstanding couplet. For a sick person, the night is painful and seems everlasting. Comparing this to suffering human beings.

Firaq wrote this couplet in the era between the first and the second world war, when humanity was sick of the battles and massacres.

Written by the poet's nephew- Ajai Mansingh, Firaq Gorakhpuri: The Poet of Pain & Ecstasy attempts to give a glimpse into the life of the poet who made the astoundingly egotistical assertion:

Aanewali naslein tum par faqr kareingii humasron

Jab woh jaanengii tum ne Firaq ko dekha thha

Future generations will be envy you, my compatriots

When they know that you had seen Firaq.

Outrageously self-assured, Firaq was a man of many parts. A poet who tasted success at an early age. He was also a freedom fighter, an Urdu poet who taught English at the venerable Allahabad University, a founder member of the powerful Left-leaning literary grouping known as the Progressive Writers' Movement, a bon vivant and an aesthete who lived his life entirely according to his own tastes and preferences.

Tanhaai mein kisko bulaaein, ai dost ?

Tum door ho kis ke paas jaaein, ai dost ?

Is daulat-e-fursat se tau dam gut-ta hai,

Yeh naqad-e-shab kahaan bhunaaein, ai dost ?

Whom should I call, O friend, in my lonely state ?

Where should I look for help, you are so far, O mate ?

This glut o time weigh upon my nerves,

This bond of endless night, who will liquidate ?

The old affection now counts for naught,

Who cares for mutual love or past regard,

The bark and bite of one night is the all- important thing,

The eight years of friendship are now a thing forgot.

Firaq was a master in the rubai. Rubai is a poem, or verse of a poem, consisting of four lines. It has the first. second and fourth lines having the same rhyming words.

It was generally used as an instrument of moral or philosophical reflection.

Firaq used it to describe sensuous female beauty captured in the most mundane of daily chores or even sometimes a tool of repartee as in the above rubai.

This was the outpouring after a fallout between Firaq and Josh Malihabadi. Firaq Gorakhpuris collection of Rubaiyaat titled Roop has been very popular right from its first publication in 1946.

Celebrated Urdu poet and critic, Firaq Gorakhpuri was born Raghupati Sahay in 1896 in Gorakhpur. Firaqs poetry showed influences of Mir and Momin.

Equally proficient in Urdu, Persian and English, he was inspired by the English romantic poets Wordsworth, Shelley and Keats and on the other hand his sense of aesthetics was deeply rooted in the tradition of Sanskrit poets.

This April we will dip into the vast ocean of Firaq Gorakhpuris poetry.

Urdu Mehfil at Prithvi Tue, 15 Feb

Ishq and the various ways of expressing love was the topic of discussion for the February Mehfil. Mohabbat, Uns, Pyar, Love has the magnetic quality of drawing people to it and enveloping them int its sweet embrace.

Farvari ke Mehfil mein kuch aisa hi hua and lovers of Urdu came from far and wide to listen to Nazms on this beautiful, heart warming, soul uplifting thing called Love.

Javed Siddiqui Sa'ab spoke eloquently on the seven stages of Love.

Shauki Sa'ab spoke about the metaphors used to express Love in an era when the purdah system was prevalent and it was very difficult to express your love for your beloved freely.

Ahmed Wasi Sa'ab shared a few of his nazms on Ishq

The beautiful discussion was interspersed with love-infused shers and audio-video clips of poetry.

Javed Sa'ab rightly said ke

Ishq ki koi had nahi hoti

Love has no limits or boundaries

It is a vast deep ocean, limitless and boundless

Every time you feel you have submerged yourself in it

You will realise that there is so much more to explore

so many nuances more to experience

wishing you all a LIfe overflowing with Ishq
